The only reason I watched the series to begin with was because of the Sheriff and (mostly) Gisborne.
Guy is an abusive asshole? Yes! He is! That's why I like him. He's in this situation that requires a hell of a lot of arse kissing and watching how he struggled in that gave him some dimension in character.
Unlike the hypocritical 'heroes' who are so quick to make excuses for their not so pure behaviour. But that's okay, because they're 'the good guys'. It's a pathetic attempt at exploring the paper thin characters and their 'dark sides' but overall, it comes across as lame and achieves nothing except making Robin a real twat.
TL;DR: Some of us like Gisborne and don't make excuses for his character because he's pretty much the only one that has any depth. It when they made him as shallow as a kiddie pool by getting hooked by Marian AGAIN that I stopped watching. Somehow the writers managed to make him OOC. I don't know how the hell that works.
PS: Liking the villain because he's the most interesting character in the series does not make me an abuser in RL.

I'm not into slash myself (not for political or religious reasons, it just doesn't do anything for me) and I stopped watching the show halfway through series 2 out of the sheer stupidity of the characters and I couldn't believe the lack of slash in the fandom. (Both Gisborne/Sheriff and Robin/Much). Not sure if that's changed now.
It's funny when you compare it to a children's series like Narnia in which slash and incest abounds in the fandom.
TL;DR: Fandom's just weird.
