Like the first anon said, a lot of premises sound dumb if you break it down, it's all in the execution. Plus people do tend to gravitate towards people they have things in common with, (like why you'll often see friend groups made up of the same race, gender, sexuality, etc), so if you write it in a plausible manner, I'm sure it'd be fine.

Thank you! My original thought was kind of that they're just sort of subconsciously drawn to each other at first and become friends, and then it makes more sense in retrospect once they each figure things out. If that makes any sense, I'm still trying to figure out how it all unfolds.
