Although now I'm imagining an age gap story featuring your typical 20-something ace and a middle-aged ace who just realized they're ace, and I'm really digging it.

I was kind of thinking both middle aged and just realizing it/coming to terms with it (might not even know there's a word, or other people like them, or a community, etc.) just because it wasn't really a thing when they were growing up. Or do you think that's too unlikely?

I agree with other commenters that you could make it work. And I think it would be interesting to see how each of them approaches the realization based on their characters and life experiences. It could be both a source of conflict and comfort in their relationship.

I didn't realize I was genderfluid until I was 39, because I didn't know it was a thing you could be. (Until then I thought I was a lone freak.)
