Am I an asshole for thinking she deserves it?

Someone in the family shared with me that she thinks my Aunt and Uncle are going to divorce soon. I told her I thought it was a long time coming because she treats him like crap. They got mad at me because I can't be sympathetic about my Aunt going through a horrible time. It's well known that I don't get along with her and she's hit me more than once. I don't know why anyone would expect me to be sorry. I would if she was going to be living in a box or something but at most she would have to downsize. She wouldn't be starving on the streets.

Nope, you're not an asshole for thinking it, but your decision to say it out loud might qualify. On the other hand, your aunt sounds like an asshole, so I for one don't blame you and I don't think your family should expect you to feel any sympathy for her, either.

No, I don't think this makes you an asshole. If it was one of your Aunt's children who you said this to, then I think it was a pretty insensitive thing to say out loud. But if it was anyone else, then, they should at the very least let you have your opinion and leave it at that. And if you're aunt has hit you, then I think your family are being pretty insensitive to not understand where you're coming from on this. They should have at least a little bit of empathy for you, even if they don't have the same experience with her as you do.

I think you're perfectly qualified to say something like that. Is it possible your relative didn't know about your relationship with your aunt, or they know something you don't?
Either way, they have no right to be mad just because you didn't fawn over their gossip.
