Yeah, I see this a lot too. It's true that YKINMK was the favoured position, but outright mockery and cruelty on whoever happened to tickle your fancy was far less frowned on. Fandom Wank only really died after the social justice movement started and a lot of the regulars began to think "oh shit these people are probably mentally ill, aren't they?" I look back at a lot of the 'famous' old wanks and feel intensely uncomfortable that some of these (genuinely struggling) people were targeted.
