I thought they did a really good job with some things, such as distressing the costumes so they didn't look brand-new (I particularly like the bit where they let Bilbo's vest hang for a while with rocks in the pockets to stretch the pockets out and make them look well-used), and I thought they did a good job with Bag End and the Shire in general. I know people have had complaints about Meduseld similar to the complaint in the secret, but I was okay with the depiction of Rohan. I will handwave anything about elven realms because ~*ELVES*~. Minas Tirith, however, just does NOT hang together as a believable, functioning city - let alone Gondor as a functioning nation - when viewed from the outside, not even as a city/nation that has degenerated and long been beleaguered by war. I would at least expect to see things like burnt-out farmsteads and evidence of field divisions like fences or stone walls. I would expect to see roads, even if they are deserted and not well-maintained.

I feel like it all started well; with the shire like you say and then it just....became less important because omg battle took over.

NAYRT but IMO the problems started as soon as they got to Bree. The design of Bree felt like it was solely around being Terrifying to the hobbits, and nothing else. And then it got worse form there.
