I guess The Last Jedi making Rey the latest person to “betray” him and framing their connection as romantic took my view of Kylo from “unbalanced extremist” to “unbalanced extremist who reminds me a bit too much of incels.”

This entire comment is so well put. I also don't see Kylo as an incel, but yeah, he reminds me of incels quite a bit, for the reasons you articulated.

This is also why I think he's a really great villain for our era. Because he epitomizes this immature, entitled, unbalanced, and embittered type of extremist we're seeing so much of right now. After TFA came out, a lot of the people I talked too (and especially the guys) were citing him as one of the parts of the movie they liked least, and when I asked why, it usually boiled down to, basically, "I couldn't take him seriously. He was laughable." Which, cool. Different strokes and all that. But personally, that's exactly what I think is great about his character. He's immature, he's pathetic, he's deeply insecure and seething with misplaced rage. In short, he's a much more realistic "bad guy" than 99% of the villains I know.
