I was actually very close to him, but living with my parents, I always thought their hurt was more important than mine... I waited almost for their approval to visit him, and really only saw him a handful of times between his admission and until it was too late.
It was complicated, and my father confided that he really didn't want us to see him near the end like that.
But at the same time, as poor as I am at dealing with death, there is a lot of my family I only know vaguely, and then some I wish to forget. I'm not saying your grandmother is either, but just as everyone deals with death differently, no death is ever the same.
Be there for you father, be there for her, so at least in the end you know that you tried. You don't need to mourn her, or do anything really, feeling things differently doesn't mean you're feeling them wrong.
