I'm no longer sure if they employ Thrage (they did after he 'quit' under an alias but that name no longer appears on the credits page so...), but I always promised myself I would use adblock and never buy as long as he works there.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
What did Thrage do?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
referred to trans people as people who "mutilate their genitals for attention" and also mocked a person with epilepsy when his flash game caused them to have a seizure.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no. That's terrible and really gross. I really hope they don't employ him anymore.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Seems kind of shitty to do anyway. You should just not play the game at all if you want to boycott. The creators, programmers, and artists deserve to be compensated for their work.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
not if they knowingly employ a transphobe (and hide him behind different names to pretend they aren't anymore). it's a free game to play, I'm playing it for free.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
How is it shitty to not buy the bonus content? I guess that makes me a really garbage person, because I never make in-game purchases.

Or is it only shitty if someone does it for ethical reasons, rather than "I prioritize my cat's prescription food over gaming"?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think they mean it's shitty to put adblock on (thus giving the site revenue) explicitly for the purpose of making sure the site gains nothing from their use of it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
so they don't want to pay a transphobe's bills? that's up to their own sense of ethics

What alias did they have him under?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I can't remember what it was, but it started with an A. But if you went to the account, it had several dragons with the same names as Thrage's dragons (and first gen Imps, which could only be staff-generated at that time, meaning they wouldn't do it for a new employee probably, but possibly for one of the founders?). But it's not any of the names currently on the credits page.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think he does any more.

They have other coders now and, if you look at his FR profile page, there's a link to his website.

Flight Rising is listed under 'past projects'.

Some of his work is listed as being as recent as the music for 'Artifracture', but it's entirely possible that those music assets were pre-planned and pre-written years in advance given how friggin' long it takes Flight Rising to do literally anything. I think both mentioned games (that and Tidal Trouble) were long planned before the release anyway. I mean, it took over a year for them to release a revamp of the auction house, it wouldn't surprise me if those had been on the table from the beginning as well.

I think he's gone, at this point. I'd certainly hope so.

OP of the thread

Thank you so much for this! I've whitelisted FR's ads now that I know he's gone. I might even buy gems if I feel like I need them! It's nice to know he's finally gone.

Same. I don't buy gems anymore, but that's mostly because I've got my hoard built up that I don't need to spend any real money to get what I want. If it makes you happy, and isn't interfering with your ability to pay the IRL bills, I say go for it! There are worse things to spend money on. I've been really enjoying the lair update, I never cared about the idea of tabs but it's so useful and the hibernal den is great.

I dont play as much as I used to, and my hoard/vault is enough that I don't need to buy gems, but I gave them $20 for gems not that long ago, because I like what they've done for the most part and want to support them. (And I spent more when I first started.) I'm glad the site is your fun place. And I hope it continues to be that for you.

I haven't needed to spend real money on gems for years, but I would have for the sake of the Hibernal Den. (incidentally, if anyone needs an item-highlight css for those unlocking tasks, hmu)

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
What is the Hibernal Den?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
it's a 'display case' for your dragons - they don't eat food, can't fight or breed or level familiars (but you can dress them, write in their bios, and change their familiars). it's a secondary den for people who don't do much with their dragons to be able to show them off and gives us more lairspace!

[personal profile] juliamon 2019-02-12 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
For the dom-oriented, it functions as free storage space for fodder without the need to feed them to keep their energy above the coli threshold. Or you can just stuff all your dragons in there if you're going on vacation IRL and don't want to worry about having to feed them. (There's a lengthy cooldown period so you can't just always keep your dragons in there and take them out to coli/breed as needed.)

And for those of us who just wants more dragons, it is a space to store dragons you want to keep but still allow you to have more room in your main lair to buy more dragons.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't play this game, but I play another (PonyIsland) and told myself I wouldn't spent real money on it outside the subscription, and even then I'd buy ingame if I could. I lied to myself ;)
