Re: What's the difference between preachy and nuaced for you?

None. Never. Yuck. Immediate back-button, theatre walk-out, channel change, etc. No matter how hard I agree with the message. It just leaves me feeling like I'm being manipulated or talked down to, and I can't stand that feeling.

Wait, you won't watch anything with any sort of message? Doesn't that eliminate most media? Most things have some sort of message, though some are more subtle than others.

I mostly watch older movies and TV shows. There are very few recent things I can watch, e.g. things made in the past 10 years.

I don't want to be a pedant here, but lots of older TV shows and movies also have morals

Some decades are certainly heavier on it than others, yep.

Which decades do you have in mind?

The 60s come to mind. Not to say there weren't gems.

I guess I have a harder time finding decades where there weren't a ton of things with morals

Like the 90s had Seinfeld sure but it also had Full House or whatever

I love pre-code (a bit moralistic but in a really trashy way), noir (same), neo-noir, the 70s antihero craze (The Godfather, The Beguiled), 80s action/fantasy/horror, all the wonderfully goofy stuff from the 90s (Dazed and Confused, Clueless, Clerks)...

And I love Stranger Things from this decade! That one didn't get preachy at all.

DA

Hold on, you're saying Clueless had no moral message?

The main character literally has a monologue going oh my god! I was the asshole all along! I shouldn't treat friends this way!
