I don't really think it's a "beggars can't be choosers" thing, though, and I don't think it's wrong to be annoyed by it. Nobody is forced to respond to a request for recs. People choose to give an answer they know the OP doesn't want and that's... honestly, kind of an impolite response, IMO. People might believe they mean well, but what they're saying is "Hey I know what you asked for, but I don't think that's important enough to respect so here's something you didn't ask for".
