I'm so pissed they went there. I liked their friendship. I liked that they turned down the prospect of something more early on and instead developed a close platonic bond. Now the series wants to destroy a cute long term marriage to have her longing after her kids' godfather. Criminal Minds has done some stupid things over the years but this is effectively killing all my interest in the show.

Haven't kept up with the show recently so take this with a grain of salt - I've never been into JJ/Reid (or really Reid with any other cast member) so I'm with you on that, but JJ/Will? Really? Seriously? Obviously, different strokes for different folks, but it just always seemed like such a beige relationship as depicted on the show.

I can't speak for everyone. But for me, I like it because they seem so normal. And because he can handle her being who she is and the job she does without having issues with it. He gets it. They just seem comfortable together. I don't always need hot and heavy. I don't read fics for this fandom. But I like her and Will.

I haven't watched in many seasons - is Will not part of the show anymore? What happened?

No, he is. He only shows up occasionally, but he and JJ are still together. There was this big reveal in the season final, though, that JJ had always had feelings for Reid and never admitted it.

Ah.
Well, how weird. Unless they're doing the 'JJ and Will are in trouble' angle, i don't see JJ as being the cheating type *at all*, so.....
What's the point?

I wonder if it's because the actor who plays Will was off doing season 2 of The Punisher. He plays a significant role in that season.

Ah, maybe. I like that actor a lot, and have always liked JJ/Will.

There's something incredibly sweet and tender about it. I admit, I wasn't sold on it when they first started hinting at it, but by the time they got married, they're easily my favorite ship from this show.

You're clearly hanging out in a different area of the fandom than I am, because everyone I've seen thus far has shared your opinion. I've lost count of how many people I've talked about this with the past week who are downright angry about this.

I personally am among those who's excited about this, because Reid/JJ is one of my personal favorite ships. I was shocked more than anything else that they went there, simply because the show had, for so long, been so adamant about not pairing off team members.

But I've also always felt that if they were going to genuinely explore the possibility, it'd be right as the show is winding down, and sure enough...

If it helps you feel any better, though, OP, there was news on TV Line yesterday that they're looking for somebody to play a potential love interest for Reid for next season, so even if they do explore the consequences of JJ's confession next season, it doesn't seem like it'll actually lead to a relationship between them.

Even if that winds up being the case and Reid and JJ ultimately agree to continue treasuring the friendship they'd had all these years, that's fine with me, too, because I do like their friendship as well. Ultimately, I'm just happy that they acknowledged there has been, and is, something deeper between them in and of itself.

(Also, while I like Reid/JJ a lot, I also like JJ/Will, so if the show were to put Reid and JJ together, I would hope they wouldn't, like, kill Will off or turn him into some nasty jerk or something in order to make that happen. I'd definitely want the show to respect Will along the way, too.)

I feel like I'm probably in the minority of Will/JJ shippers who actually doesn't mind this (in theory)? Obviously, if it turns into a shitshow, I'll revise my opinion, but there's something bittersweet about an impossible love. The love that doesn't work realistically because you love someone else, or the timing wasn't right, or or or, and I feel like with Reid and JJ, the possibility was always there, but the stars never aligned, and that's okay. You can acknowledge feelings for someone without wanting to upend your life and divorce your spouse, or even saying you don't love your spouse/it's a sham/whatever.

Agreed on all of this. Well put :).

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
:)

I just. Emotions are messy and complicated, man, and so are people. Most people have a "what if" at some point in their lives, and I don't mind fiction exploring and acknowledging that between two characters who very obviously care deeply about each other. It's realistic!

AYRT

Exactly! I'm so glad somebody sees it this way. This past week has been full of people going on about how JJ's now destroyed her marriage and if she loves Reid then that means her feelings for Will weren't genuine or whatever and I'm just over here like...??? We don't even know yet how they'll deal with this confession going forward, after all, and I've never seen JJ and Reid as the sort of people who would disrespect their/somebody else's marriage. That's just not who they are.

I have no problem with people not caring for this particular ship, mind-I get where it won't be everyone's thing, and I knew this ending wouldn't play well with some fans in general. And even as a Reid/JJ fan, I don't know that I would've personally written the confession this particular way.

But some of the reactions I've seen online this past week have just been...I dunno. It's just not as black and white as I think some people want it to be or think it should be or whatever, and I just feel it's too early to be all gloom and doom about how this plays out.

Meh. To each their own, and all that. *Shrugs*

It is normal to have feelings for more than one person. But to not tell your husband that while you love him, you also have feelings for this other guy you work with is kind of a shitty thing to do. Relationships should be about honesty. She should have had this discussion with Will and worked through her feelings. Poor Will.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
This. I don't ship either pairing and have no emotional investment. But generally speaking, I think it's nice to show that sometimes things don't work out and it's not a huge tragedy per se, it's just one of those things in life that happens. I hope the show doesn't make a big deal out of it.

I'd seen that early crush as a situation where Reid is socially awkward, young, on the Spectrum, and stuck at work all the time. So, when he wants to believe he's into a girl, he focuses on a pretty girl he's around all the time. But he would have either found someone else or grown out of it.

Weird that they'd go to any effort to bring back such a passing random thing.
