It was a weird phrasing to me, but maybe it's a translation thing?

Also seconding the 'not reading the right fics', but then, I don't know OP's primary fandoms, so there might not be good stuff for the characters they care about.

As a kinkster and fic reader/writer, like... some people get it right for sure, but then, no one's experiences with kink are universal, so there's also a lot of room for 'well that's not how I feel about X'. (and, granted, like... in fic subspace is a lot easier to attain than in rl, because fantasy)

I do think there's a ton of BDSM fic - maybe the majority - that just feels incredibly formulaic and lifeless, like someone just going through the motions, without really getting into any of the reasons why it's actually hot (to me). Just, like, having one character call the other "sir"... it just doesn't get there for me.

I definitely don't want to argue with you on that one-- I don't read in any really big fandoms right now, so I haven't had to wade through much soulless bdsm fic.

I like to focus on the internal feelings, like... that's something I think people who think it's hot in fiction but who haven't done it might not have a grasp of, what goes through your head and your heart in scene.

Yes! Exactly. I want to feel like the characters are real people and I want to get some sense of what they're feeling in the moment and a sense of physical immediacy and context.
