It just didn't taste sweet. (Maybe that's more a matter of taste? I know I ate a bunch of fudge at work one Christmas that no one else wanted because they said it was too sweet.)

And the texture was wrong too - very dense and chewy, more like a chocolate bar than fudge.

I might have to experiment a little.

Hmmm, strange. Well, if you try it again I'd go with milk chocolate chips since you prefer it on the sweet side, skip the butter. The only other issue I can think of it being careful that you're not overheating it. I make mine on the stove top because I feel that I can better control the temperature that way. Microwaving chocolate can be tricky because microwaves have hot spots and overheating chocolate can give it this weird, grainy texture and it can actually taste burned. :(
