You can skip the butter. The chocolate may have seized and that might be the cause of the lumpiness - it can sort of clump up if it gets overheated or it comes into contact with water during the heating process (this may be because of the butter - some butters have a slightly higher water content than others). I would be careful with the heating, you can still microwave, but don't overheat it, you just need the chips mostly melted, then stirring and the residual heat will take care of the rest. Once you remove it from the heat, you can add some vanilla extract if you want (this enhances the chocolate flavor). Since you like it sweet, I would suggest substituting in a cup of sweeter chips for the semi-sweet.
