I mean why bother with stuff that isn't marketed towards you? I read a fair amount of manga and there's no shortage of stuff explicitly for women. The solution should more beefcake for and by women than forcing people who have no interest to make stuff that doesn't appeal to them.

Except comic audiences have never been entirely straight men even from the beginning. And the fact that the creators continue to market to only one part of their audience and don't care about the rest is a problem.

Are you suggesting that Manga audiences HAVE been entirely for straight women from the start? Because your point doesn't address anons comment about Manga has stuff marketed just for women and how that's not a problem

Also, "Women have read comics right from the beginning" is absolutely a true statement. And they have always loved them. If you're a comic fan it's because you are already MORE than ok with wonder womans bathing suit costume.

I suspect comics are being made not for genders, but for people who read comics. I doubt anyone in comics is going "Men will love this and fuck women who cares what they like" but they are probably sitting there going "The men and women who love comics and have always loved comics have always bought this stuff. Lets do more stuff like that so that they will give us their money"

But also, that "Buff muscular men" are there because men want to see them? Naw. Not at all. If comics were made by genders and only for the male one, the women would all be in spandex as they are, and the men would all look like fat/scrawny nerdy neckbeards in leather jackets and with fedoras. If I wanted a power fantasy its not "This dude who looks nothing like what I will ever look like". I promise you, women get more out of Dick Graysons legs / ass or supermans skin tight spandex over his male-model chest than I ever will. My "Male power fantasy" looks like Harry Dresden, not Superman or Batman.

All that said, I do agree that more women making comics for themselves and other women would not be anything like a bad thing. I just want the people who're shitting on the bits of comics I like to stop doing that.

Shockingly, some people like these things for other reasons and aren't looking for beefcake, so no that's not "the solution". Those people spend money too. The people doing the marketing and creation likely could be a lot more successful if they recognize and respect a larger customer base.

"The people doing the marketing and creation likely could be a lot more successful if they recognize and respect a larger customer base."

This, absolutely. There are creative solutions that would continue to satisfy what's thought of as the core demographic while not antagonizing swathes of other potential readers.

(Or one could just buy Image and indie titles. :p)

I don't want beefcake

I just don't want girls to be nothing but walking sex dolls

Who are you thinking of? Because I can think of NO comic character that meets that description.

I mean, they all look sexy, sure, but if looking sexy means that someone can't see them as anything other walking sex dolls, if looking hot means that their character and storied are now irrelevent... I'd guess that person has an issue with women.
