I haven't seen the movie, but how does that make her a different species?

Maybe the babies are intersex or agender.

They could just be different varieties/breeds/color morphs of the same species.

they could be. All of them, though? I don't think that's what the creators intended. I think they tried to have it both ways: boy=dark/girl=light and two different species and then it got muddled.

Maybe they mean 'breed' instead of 'species' but fudged the word.

I mean.

You can cross a German Shepherd with a Pug. Both dogs, both the same species, can breed and produce viable offspring, different breeds (or ... dog races). The offspring would be a mixture of the two.

Now I'm going to google it to see if anybody has been weird enough to make a crossbreed of those two.
