That's like saying Harry Potter the films are better than the books. They're two different media. One can't be better than the other. You can only say you enjoyed one more than the other.

I disagree. It's hard to compare apple and oranges, but everyone knows that a fresh apple is better than a rotten orange.

I've not seen the musical but I watched the film a lot when I was a kid in the 90s and also the cartoon series, which was supposed to be more kid friendly (obviously) but still had quite a bit of nightmare fuel in it iirc.

Anyway, I watched the film again recently and even with the now dated looking special effects I can't believe my parents were ok with me watching that. But I suspect they actually weren't and my sister and I just watched it anyway.

I agree, honestly. I love the movie, but I much prefer the way the relationship between Lydia and her father was written in the musical. It was just really sweet and poignant and I liked the way the musical handled the concepts of grief/loss and moving on.
