NIGHT

oh god, mornings are just evil and morning people make me want to kill things

Why do night people always say that? What do we do that's so horrible?

exist :p

nah, seriously, it's just the energy conflict - boundless energy in the mornings when night people just want to hide from the world

Man, I reeeeeeally wish I had energy at night. I'd be happy to have the ability to string together sentences after 8pm.

DA - I really try not to begrudge morning people, as long as they don't say judgey and/or ignorant things about how night people should be/feel.

That said, I have to struggle against my resentment because most of society is designed around morning people. Standard work hours are the biggest one. But what time stores, most restaurants, and public facilities open and close is another big one.

Being a night person does not just mean I'd rather not get up early. It means I actively and intensely feel horrible in the mornings. Every single morning when I get up to go to work, I'm profoundly exhausted, my stomach is clenched, my eyes burn agonizingly, and by far the hardest part is that I'm depressed to the degree that it warps my perception of reality for a couple of hours. Eventually, around late morning, the depression and the discomfort and the exhaustion burn off like a fog and by the afternoon I feel...normal.

But nightshift jobs are largely out, because I want a life where I spend quality time my friends and my family and my partner. Where I get to go to restaurants and out for coffee and to the rec center and shopping at the mall - without having to squeeze it in before work first thing in the day.

Standard work hours are hard for us, too, though. It really sucks to have to go work when you have BOUNDLESS ENERGY to do ALL THE THINGS you need/want to do in your personal life. And then have zero energy for those things when your free time rolls around.

Also, having to stay at work in the afternoon when that depression and exhaustion and warped perception you're talking about starts creeping in. My ideal work day would be 5-2, but that's never gonna happen, either.

Personally, I would choose feeling functional when I actually have to function, about a thousand times over feeling functional when it's 2 a.m, eveything is closed and everyone is asleep.

I'm a bit of an extreme case, but personally, my inability to function in the mornings is a big part of why the government has to help me get by, financially. Because I literally only have the personal fortitude to manage two to three days a week of getting up and pretending to be ok. More than that and I can't hold myself together.

The idea that someone can get out of bed between 5 a.m and 9 a.m and just feel ok is...there's a hell of a lot I would trade for that, and for the basic human functionality that comes with it. If it meant having very little energy afterwards, I'd sure as fuck take that trade off.

Also, while I am an extreme case of night-owl, you sound like a pretty extreme case of morning-person. I work long hours with a lot of morning people, and most of them are still doing fine at 5 p.m. It's when 9 p.m. or so rolls around that a lot of them start flagging. Meanwhile the day is finally getting to the easy stage for me.

I think the world is largely oriented around morning people, but it's not oriented around level-ten morning people, any more than it's oriented around moderate-to-extreme night owls. It's oriented around people who wake up feeling fine at 7 a.m., not people who can't sleep past 4:30 a.m even if they were up until midnight.

I agree with you, and also I wish I could get away with waking up at 7, but my freaking job needs me to be there between 7:30 and 8AM, so...

If I had my druthers, I'd be active between 10AM and 2AM. Ain't gonna happen, sadly.

You have my sympathies. My call times vary, so I do sometimes get the nice, comfy noon call, but other times I get a 6:30 a.m call time, or even a 6 a.m call time. If I ever quit my job, that'll be why.

Ugh. If I ever wind up in jail, it's going to be for assaulting one of the managers who totally thinks it's okay to call/text at 5AM. Luckily, it doesn't happen very often, and I actually have decent self-restraint once I've got a cup or two of coffee in me.
