Hah! I like this comment, and I agree.

I think there's a tendency to conflate the tackiness of (some parts of) American culture, with other, less harmless and defensible parts of American culture. So the tackiness ends up seeming awful to some people, because in their minds it's come to symbolize a lot of other shit that it's not actually inherently related to at all.

That's my take, anyway, as a non-American.
