I mean, the movie doesn't want you to think he's abused or anything. It's definitely in the "your family are kind of dicks, but they don't mean anything by it" genre of 90s unhappy movie families. If the movie was about the parents instead of the kid, they'd have been magically made unable to lie or found out they were really Peter Pan or something.
