If it's just a fanfic thing, maybe you could pretend the cat is a cat in name only? And it's actually some alien creature that kind of resembles what we'd call a cat and just so happens by sheer coincidence to also be called a cat.

Or it could just be a cat. After all, why does Star Wars have humans? We're Earth animals too. If it can have humans, why not cats?
