If you're white it's pretty safe, even if you're a woman traveling solo or queer. The general consensus I've seen online is that it's a very similar experience to visiting Italy in terms of being wary of crime/corruption, but less sexual harassment than Italy or the Middle East.

The real hassle is getting the paperwork together, since iirc you have to be sponsored by someone in Russia (generally just a tourist agency) to be allowed in.
