110. Did...did she watch a different series than you and I and everyone else? Isn't one of the major points of the show that Aang never wanted to be Avatar but owned up to his responsibility? Oh well. I agree w/you 100% anyways.

130. The way I see it, listening to an audiobook is an entirely different experience from sitting down and reading a book, and they each have their own strengths. Either way, though, you're still experiencing literature. I, for one, say more power to you.

Apparently a large portion of fandom thinks that Aang got a Deus Ex World Turtle and didn't have to do any growing up at all - that he didn't "lose" anything, and that he didn't act maturely or responsibly because he didn't kill Ozai.

Which strikes me as - as the OP said - bitter, cynical and petulant in a really juvenile way.

My question would be - Why is it the only way someone grows is when they lose something?

Lots of growing can be done through achieving, gaining, etc. It's often not what you get, but the journey. And lose or gain you grow.

To my mind, Aang is the same type of hero as Sara Crewe* - a large point of his story is that he maintains his personal integrity no matter how bad outside circumstances get. If he'd killed Ozai or given up his attachment to Katara (or any of his other friends) to master the Avatar State the way the guru wanted him to, he'd have also given up his personal integrity.

(Do not even get me STARTED on the crap theory that Roku only married Mrs. Roku because he needed to distract himself from his EPIC LOVE for Sozin; especially how it completely disregards the importance and value of friendship and platonic love - which is also one of the major themes of the story.)

I never got the Deus Ex thing because Aang references the Lion Turtle in season two. ...'Course, I had to have that pointed out because I am unobservant, but the creators more than likely already had that idea planned from the start.

And I thought Aang grew a hella lot throughout the series. They all did.

The lion-turtle is a recurring visual motif through S2, as well - it's all over Earth Kingdom armor and (IIRC) architecture.

Didn't lose anything except his entire culture and everyone in it--and his previous more carefree life. His problem wasn't that he had an instinct to be selfish, it was that his instinct was to run away (see: Toph's explanation of why he's bad at earthbending). He got over that. I agree, there's nothing immature or irresponsible about it. Ozai was neutralized.

I hear a lot of, blah blah blah PERSISTENT CHANCE OF COUP, blah blah blah FIRE NATION DISSIDENTS blah blah blah AANG IS A SELFISH BRAT.

Apparently they failed to notice, or recognize as canon, the episodes where conditions in the FN were just as bad as they were everywhere else.
