I'd say they're about the same difficulty level.

It's easier to do 3D stuff with a basic crochet hook, or other funky shapes, than knitting needles, and it takes up less elbow space, if you're trying to work somewhere cramped like a bus seat.

I'm told crocheted socks are... not good.

You really need high quality extra fine gage yarn stitched a tiny bit looser than expected in order to get something that won't leave stitch-shaped dents in your feet. Nylon in the yarn blend will help with durability issues.
Above all costs avoid cheap synthetic yarns for socks. They do not breathe, and they will pill as soon as you look at them sideways. And if you use cheap acrylics with extra tight stitching, the socks will stiffly stand up by themselves.
