ESL people: Why did you learn English?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I was watching Fullmetal Alchemist on Netflix - yes, there is a live action movie, and yes, it is as bad as it sounds - and I remembered why I decided to learn English back in 8th grade. I wanted to be able to understand porny doujinshi translated into English as I could not read Japanese.

So I went on the Internet to find some of them for nostalgia's sake. I can actually understand them now - well, except from the weird syntax but I guess that's par for the course with fan made translation. I was really surprised at how rapey they could get though.

X-Men: Evolution on Cartoon Network then X-Men comics and all the fandom around them. Well I was taught some English in highschool before that but I was more interested in learning Spanish at the time; it's only two years ater graduation that suddenly I found some interest in it and got better. (Helps a lot with scientific papers, too...)

I didn't really actively decide, I just started reading fanfic and most of it was in English so I just gradually got better at it. I unconsciously learned a lot about understanding words/expressions in context rather than constantly looking up every little word I didn't understand in a dictionary.

I got put in English immersion class in kindergarten. I kinda wish there'd been a dual immersion class back then because it makes me feel a little sad that I can't express myself as eloquently in my native language as I can in English.

Because it's a mandatory class all through school since at least fourth grade. ( Sweden)

At least half of the media we consume is in English.

After school, I worked for an American western riding trainer so I got English that way. I much prefer reading in English and fandom culture is for the most part English or Swedish with gratuitous sprinklings of English fandom lingo.

My mom wanted us to learn english from an early age so we learned. I got better by reading lots of fics, books and other stuff in english. Of course I'm not perfect and derp a lot here and there, of course. :p

Isn't that movie only a couple years old? How did you get fluent so quickly?

Because it was a mandatory school subject.

I got good at English because Polgara, the Sorceress never was translated around here and I desperately wanted to read it. Then I discovered manga, which also wasn't translated around here. And then I discovered fanfic.
