Crocheting lets you make fancy-looking things easier, but most of them requires you to read patterns continually. Knitting lets you space out; if you keep it to simple and familiar patterns, you can do it without thinking eventually. Crocheting is definitely better suited for smaller pieces, knitting for bigger ones. Crocheting is probably easier to pick up simply because there's pretty much just one stitch with some variations, but it's not like you need to know more than maybe four techniques in order to knit either, so.

I prefer knitting because it makes time spent watching TV feel a bit less of a waste.
