I had a similar problem with "segue." I saw it in writing and always thought it was "seh-GOO" but then heard people say "SEG-way" and finally figured out from context that this was the same word (this was before Segway scooter thingies were a thing, but I'm not sure that would have cleared things up any faster.)

OMG, me too! It's not a word I use much at all, so it was never really an issue, but for the longest time I thought they were different words.
