Maybe Shassie?

The show Psych had a thing with pineapples. And, apparently, if you don't ship Gus/Shawn, you're maybe racist.

that makes more sense than the two SW m/m ships mentioned above, which don't really have non-white alternatives.

Reylo isn’t m/m and the non white alternative is FinnRey.

oh, fair enough.

I think they probably do mean Kylux, because it *was* a big stupid Tumblr thing when TFA came out. It's just that it seems like that's a million years ago now.

It doesn't make you racist but there is a clear pattern, historically, in fandom, with ships involving black characters being less popular. And Shawn/Gus is an example of that.

Numb3rs -

There is more fic for Colby/Lorne (SGA), a character from a completely different show and genre, than there is for Colby/David, his close friend and partner who he *canonically* went on a date with.*

*Shut up, I know it was for a bet, but it still counts. (All these years on, I still have really strong feelings on Numb3rs ships. Larry/Megan 4ever!!!!)

Yeah, I never really got this. I mean, I could sort of see why Colby/Charlie was so popular, although it wasn’t my thing. But I could never understand why Colby/David seemed so unpopular.

Well, fair enough, I'm not saying it never happens

God there are so many black/white, or even just PoC/white, m/m ships that on paper have everything fandom usually salivates over, and they always get discarded for some white m/m option. Even if that option has 30 secs of screentime in the whole thing.

I was just thinking the other day about how the Psych setup is in a lot of ways another iteration of the Sherlock Holmes dynamic, and yet one of the only versions of that dynamic where Holmes/Watson isn't the dominant slash ship.

Re: Maybe Shassie?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but I think the difference for me between the iterations of Holmes/Watson that I've seen and Psych is that GusShawn doesn't seem to have the same sort of... antagonistic relationship that ShawnLassie does?

And I like that antagonism. Like, I love Gus and Shawn too, but Gus always seems to go along with Shawn's shenanigans and it's a little too boring for me. If I enjoyed the BFFs4EVER dynamic in my relationships, they'd be totally up my alley, but I love the 'one or both are assholes to each other' dynamic more.

I get where you're coming from, but for me personally, I think there's something really awesome about the dynamic where one character knows how stupid and reckless and shenanigan-y the other character is, but they still go along with all their ideas anyway. It's really great to me.

nayrt I think some of it was people liking the antagonism, and often there's a tendency to like rival/enemy ships over friend ones, but some of the fans didn't even think of Shawn and Lassie as that antagonistic and kept being disappointed that the show didn't make them friendlier. (I only saw the first three seasons I think, so I don't know where they went with it in canon.)

So I do think race played a part in why Shawn/Gus wasn't popular. That doesn't mean I think people who shipped Shawn with Lassiter were racist, or that I think anyone sat there thinking "Well I could ship him with Gus but I'd rather ship him with a white guy," but I think if Gus had been white the fandom would have been different. I've liked my own ships with their own issues myself, so I'm definitely living in a glass house here, but those are my two cents.

Shrug.

In my current fandom, the Mixed Race/Latino mm pairing is almost twice as common as the next most popular ship. The actors had a lot of chemistry, I guess.

This is mostly a trend specific to black characters.

I guess. I tend not to go for the juggernaut pairings to start with.
