You insert yourself into the role of the hotter of the two characters?

you and I have very different brains

yeah, I have no idea why. I just want to be the 'hot' one I guess? but whichever one is the most attractive to me, I want them to bottom and I want to get into their headspace.

I don't self-insert, but I do vibe vicariously with the characters very strongly, and I get this and don't think it's weird. It feels really good to feel hot and desirable. It can even be arousing to feel that way. And with fiction, you can kind of have it both ways if you want. The character can be insecure about their appearance, and as a reader you empathize with their insecurity, yet you also have the satisfaction and good feelings of knowing they're really hot and that their partner desires the hell out of them.

Plus, even in real life, I'd rather be with someone a bit less good looking than me than be with someone better looking than me. I know it's a little...whatever...but it's nice to feel like your partner is proud when people look at you together. Which, I mean, obviously if your partner loves you they'll be proud to be with you regardless of what you look like. But it's just nice to think they're proud of how beautiful their partner is, too.
