It is 2019!!!!! You can find good female characters! Why the hell are you talking like every single female character in media is a sexy idealized women character written by a dumb man!!!!!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
why are you acting like these sexy lamps still aren’t the norm and the majority when THEY STILL ARE. killing eve, gone girl, mad max, and the like don’t offset the mass of sexy coat hangers walking around in big fandom.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
dude, this honestly sounds like a giiiiiiiiiant chip on your particular shoulder, there are so many awesome girls out there right now??

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
I didn’t say there aren’t. They just aren’t the norm or the majority. Can you not read.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
okay, i guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree on the "majority" thing, then, because i honestly think the number of nuanced women way outpaces the sexy lamps at this point

Can you give me the coordinates to your planet? Because I want to move there.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like to live on whatever planet you're currently on because here on earth in the current year, this is not true.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
there are so many awesome girls out there right now??

DA - There are definitely a lot more awesome female characters out there right now than there were ten years ago. I agree about that.

However, I think you have to take into account the types of shows that tend too amass major fandoms. Very serious, strongly written shows that have a high degree of realism don't tend to get massive fandoms - yet it's often those shows that are making leaps and bounds in their creation of excellent female characters.

When I think about the shows which have female characters I really love...they're mostly shows where I don't ship anything. It's not that I ship two of the dudes instead of any other pairings; I just don't feel particularly shippy about the show at all. And usually, neither do many other people, or so the available fics on AO3 would suggest.

Have any new shows or movies actually gotten major fandoms in the last 3 years?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
this is probably actually a big enough question that someone should make a thread in gencom about it tomorrow

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - Gotta admit, typing up my comment, I was asking myself that. I kept thinking, like, shit, am I COMPLETELY out of the loop, or are SPN, Sherlock, Merlin, and Teen Wolf leaving gaping fandom holes in their wake? (I'm excluding Doctor Who and MCU because they're still going pretty strong, and HP's been kind of just kicking around for aaaages now. But yeah, are we developing a scarcity of megalithic fandoms?)

I guess maybe new Star Wars fandom? It's pretty big, but is it mostly just meta and in-fighting? Or is it actually super rife with fanworks once you get past the wank? I have no concept.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think the reality is that younger fans just watch youtube and so they're either into kpop or fascism

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
This is exactly what I’m getting at. Yes women have gotten better written but those women aren’t in media that attracts fandom. So when people say things like “there’s awesome women right now” I’m like yeah. But not in media that attracts fandom art/fics. But then they proceed to bitch about people not caring about women in big name fandoms such as video games/mcu/anime and I’m like no shit there’s crap f/f or female representative there, because most of the female characters are about as deep as a puddle. Hence why should I and others have to do the leg work and care for these cardboard cut outs when the creator clearly doesn’t care. Start holding the creators accountable. Not the women in fandom. It is not fandoms job to pull characterization and nuance out of our ass where it doesn’t exist.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I do pretty much agree with you ITT.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
But it's not like most of the male characters in video games/MCU/anime are all that deep either. I mean, I enjoy MCU but let's be honest, it's not an example of deep, complex characterization for ANY of its characters. I like anime too, but again, the guys are just as trope-y as the girls. A lot of the time people just ship them because they're hot, not because they're all that well-written. You're fooling yourself if you think that better writing is the reason people are so into most male characters - it's just not that deep. Women are into hot men, period. That's all there is to it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
it's bad that they're the majority but come on, what is this?

Male creators: *shocked pikachu jpg* why don’t people like my sexy idealized women character??

Acting like that's representative of the universe of women characters in 2019 is just dumb

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
do you people not know what the word majority means. yes it has improved but that doesn’t mean media still doesn’t have a ways to go in writing minorities well and considering the struggle women have to go through to get writing gigs and how media constantly passes over women to write about women to give to men. In recent memory, the max landis issue. Or that universal has pledged to hire one (1) whole female director in 18 months of their woman power friendly move or whatever.

The simple solution to this is hire more women but until that happens sexy lamps/generic love interests that many women find hard to relate to are still gonna be the borderline norm.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
I understand what a majority is. Do you know what a majority is. Because the post was written like any time someone points at a female character, it's a sexy idealized woman written by a man, and that's just not the case.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
No. The post is talking about male creators being shocked that m/m is popular and not the dead wife/useless female character instead. It isn’t saying all female characters are shit but when you write them as useless it shouldn’t be a surprised people don’t care for them. Male creators going “idk why destiel/sterek/narusasu/rikusora/stucky/etc... is popular when I devote little and less time to female characters or use them for tragic manpain. What a mystery!!” is a valid criticism.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Why did male creators even enter the conversation, though

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Because the original point of the post was “maybe women can’t relate to f/f because the characters aren’t written well because men (who dominate media) can’t write women well and many go on record saying how hard it is for them so as a result many people in fandom have no interest in writing about characters that don’t grab their attention”

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But there are things created by women now, everyone just says they're not good enough because xxxxx reasons

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Now you’re being purposely obtuse. the conversation wasn’t about female creators. It’s about male creators who write unrealistic female characters and why women have trouble relating to them. In addition to that men creators still dominate most media outside of probably YA literature.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The original discussion was about why women don't relate to female characters, and men writing female characters was one reason given
