I probably came off a little harsh about Mulder: I kind of see him as The Face Of Conspiracy Theory Culture now, something I've gone off on in both my DW and on Twitter.

I was a casual fan of X Files since the first season, but my hardcore fandom (fic writing, posting to forums, etc) amped up right around the time that the show was winding down. And yes, I remember the mutterings of "who is this guy?" When Doggett showed up (and also, "Why don't they just let Scully carry the show?") But I liked Doggett and even Reyes as characters and would have watched additional seasons with them.

But it's hard for me to watch the show at all now, when Qanon True Believers are threatening actual violence, and conspiracy theory culture has dragged the discourse so far down.
