Based on #1

I scroll right past "a wall of tags," but how many lines is a wall for you? If you're using a laptop or a desktop, how many lines of tags do you consider a wall? What about on your phone?

For me, if the AO3 tags take up an entire phone screen while scrolling, I'm out.

I don't read on my phone so can't help you there.

For desktop, it is more than 5 lines.

Seconding everything you said. More than 5 lines and my eyes glaze over instinctively.

I read pretty exclusively on my desktop or laptop and....'wall of tags' to me is ten or more lines. I don't use that to guide me if i'll read - I mostly ignore them - but that, to me, is a 'wall'.

Same to all of this.

On laptop/desktop, probably half the height of the browser. I don't visit fanfiction sites while on my phone, so I don't care.

I only read fics on my desktop and I wouldn't call it a 'wall' yet, but my eyes start to glaze over when we go into the fourth line of tags.

I don't think it is number so much as style. Tell me the characters, ship, kinks, etc. But tumblr-style humor tags? I'm avoiding your fic.

Honestly I don't really care about any tags beyond the pairing, is it canon or AU, and whether or not it's got some of my DNWs like ABO.

I'm pretty lenient but more than 3-5 lines of tags (on desktop/laptop) is too many. That's a solid 50 tags or so. You should be able to communicate your point with 50 tags.

Wow, really? I see a few people naming 5 lines. I've written fics with 5 lines of tags, and I never considered it a wall, and I'm one of the people who won't read a wall.

But I counted, and my five lines is only 20 tags, so? IDK.

That's why this thread is interesting.

Depends on your screen resolution, I guess?

There's just a point where it reaches absurdity and it's almost like I just stop trusting the writer.

Something like this:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/7765501/chapters/17710024

Honestly, I went looking for a very specific fic that really started to piss me off every time I had to scroll by it, but I got lazy trying to find it so this is close enough...
Like if you plan on having /that/ many characters/parings, put it in a note. They can't all be that important! There are tags that exist to get your point across without being so actively annoying.

Well, now for that one it does make a little bit of sense, as the story is over 300K and pulls in characters from a buttload of fandoms.

Where I nope out is when there are ten lines of tumblr rambletags for a 800-word fic.

2 or 3 for most fics but 4-5 on your 100k ones. Though if a fic is under 3k, has 3 lines of tags and the author is just shitposting I'm out.
