Eliwood's dad dying.

To my defence, Fire Emblem was the first ever JRPG-ish game I played. It was years before I knew that all dads die on FE.

I played WoW for 10 years, and in all that time the two quests that always made me cry were the Crusader Bridenbrad quest in Icecrown (where you go all over Dragonblight and other places trying to get something that will save a dying paladin of the Light) and the whole Lillian Voss storyline.

Also, the two cinematics in WoD involving Yrel: "The Dark Star Descends" and The Shattrath Harbor one with Durotan and Yrel vs Blackhand. The latter wasn't sad, but it made me cry every time because Yrel was so AWESOME.

(My saddest non-gameplay moment was becoming aware of how completely Blizzard trashed Kael'thas, but anyone who knows me has heard me gnash and wail plenty about that topic already.)

There was a questline in WoW: Wrath of the Lich King where you have to save these peaceful little frog creatures after their town is razed by monsters. They are being dragged around by chains. Some live, but when they die they say really depressing stuff like this:

-Please take... my shinies. All done...
-We not do anything... to them... I no understand.
-Use my shinies... make weather good again... make undead things go away.
-We gave shinies to shrine... we not greedy... why this happen?
-I do something bad? I sorry...

I am sure that I have had worse but the only thing coming to mind right now is playing lemmings on the pc as a little girl when at my dad's house and realising I could not dig them out of the literall hole I had dug and they were all going to die either trapped in a hole or falling off a cliff.

I also remember feeling bad for Crash Bandicoot when Coco was a big damn douchecanal to him in Crash 3 when he was ONLY TRYING TO HELP.

I felt super responsible for getting Bugs Bunny home on the lost in time game on ps1. And that original Micky Mouse game on there was just super dark. There was some parts with his magic brush and others where you were trapped in a carnivorous forest? Bad times.

All the late 90s Star Wars games seemed to be packed with woe too.

The ending of Persona 3. There were other circumstances at play, obviously, but it was basically the thing that pushed me over the brink into a massive depressive phase.

The quest in Icecrown in WoW where you try to save a dying Paladin, and ultimately can't, the whole thing is very somber and respectful(makes sense given the rl context of why it was put in) and was one of the few times I actually felt numb after doing something in a game. I had to walk away for a bit and do something else when I was finished with it.

Fucking Ysera's death in Valsharah, I was legit crying my eyes out by the end of that and my druid-buddy in my guild came to sit with me and console me after I completed it. We also messed around with some toys after to give her a send-off.

My green lightning-wolf-thing in a PS2 Monster Rancher game dying on me, I get very attached to my little pixel-pets and I couldn't keep playing without him so I turned it off without saving so he's still there on that save-cartridge and forever shall be. (I also have a little toy of that creature so I named it after him and always have him sitting on my desk, it's dumb but it makes me feel better about it).

Haurchefant's death in FFXIV wrecked me and pretty much everyone else I know. My FC actually had to make a separate channel in TeamSpeak to take people into when they ran that dungeon so they didn't end up crying in front of everyone else because almost everyone DID cry when it happened.

I was so upset by the entire ending to FFXV that I literally didn’t sleep that night. I kept alternating between crying and just feeling completely hollowed out. It still hits me sometimes, but thank god for the Ep Ignis alternate end and just the fandom in general for commiserating and fuckin fixing that shit.
