But all weebs do suck

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Nah

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
You say this on every anime secret

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't been wrong yet

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 12:31 am (UTC)(link)

100% agreed

I’ll probably catch some “they’re not hurting anyone so why does it matter” flak for this, which is frankly fair, but I do think there’s a certain social imperative to reasonably conceal your power levels, and I do roll my eyes at those who don’t. Especially if it’s incredibly disrespectful, which I see entirely too often— i.e. there was a group of older teens that went to the local Asian supermarket as though it was an anime convention, running around shrieking “anime Japanese” and making huge deals out of completely common food items because they had Japanese writing on them. Nothing to say of how they acted at the poor workers. (Most of whom are Korean or Filipino in the first place, but these kids just saw “Asian” and equated it with “Japanese”.) It’s... it’s just a grocery store, weebs.

SAKURA-CON HAS ESSENTIALLY NOT CHANGED FROM THIS

NUH UH, IT TOTALLY HAS

VIC WON'T VOICE THE COMMERCIAL

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's kinda the problem though. The embarrassing fans and the stigma around make it so that closet weebs have this defensive complex about liking anime, which can make it a pain to unabashedly enjoy anime with the closet fans.

You can see the same kind of jackassery on Chinatown tours. The problem is bad tourists, not specifically weebs.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it’s definitely not tourists, these are local kids for sure. Tourists are their own brand of shit; these are just the worst kind of weeb.

If decently behaving fans hide that they're fans just because of the annoying ones, that only furthers the "fans of this thing are all terrible" stereotype. If someone assumed I go screaming fake Japanese in Asian markets just because I have anime charms on my phone, I would consider it their problem. Fortunately, though, the real world is more mature than fandom about people's harmless hobbies.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Decently behaving fans are still fans of a genre that's like 95% fanservice

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Decently behaving fans don't exclusively watch the light novel based subgenre of anime, so nah.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, all of the great and popular and not-light-novel-based shows that anime fandom loves and embraces like

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty clear you don't actually watch anime, but to help you out: Mob Psycho 100 is currently airing and fits all your criteria.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
OK, that's one.

No, listen, clearly, I'm exaggerating a little, you have your Mob Psycho 100 and your gambling shows and whatever. But it's pretty enormously outweighed, in terms of the shows that get made and the attention fandom pays to them, by things that are aggressively fan-service-y. Most people who call themselves anime fans are not watching the 1 or 2 shows a season that don't depend on fanservice, and then calling it a day. It's a characteristic of both the genre, and the fandom, and the industry.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

So you're saying that people can only call themselves "fans" of anime if they consume a massive amount of anime every season -- never mind that with the sheer overwhelming amount of content available in every medium and the headache inherent in dealing with competing streaming services, most people's viewing habit now consists of picking a few shows they like on the streaming site they prefer, and then calling it a day.

Well, that's a good way to make sure that the only people who count as "fans" are also the ones most likely to exhibit all the behaviors associated with the worst part of fandom. That's definitely not a disingenuous argument in any way!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-03 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an anime fan and I don't even watch two shows a season, so ... My current favorite anime is Aggretsuko. Does it have fanservice?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-03 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I would like to apologize twenty years after the fact for doing this exact thing in local Asian markets when I was just a baby weeb. Group of friends, random Japanese, and all. *cringe*

Now I'm a full-grown weeb who hides her power levels even among baby weebs. Much as I would love to be all "back in my day, you little whippersnappers! And learn to speak Japanese properly!". ;)

Ironic... weeb...?

Are those, like, the ones that put on ahegao clothes on them and wear them publicly because it's a fad or something? (I'm seriously very confused by the term).
