No, you're supposed to respond with as much patience and understanding as you can muster when someone who is hurt by what you're doing steps forward and says something. No one said you had to stop doing what you're doing.

Hmm. I don't think that an attitude consisting of "poor thing, let's indulge her" is going to help her coping abilities much in the future. Especially considering that the world is just a large fandomecrets with lots of people who don't stop to think about how you feel.

Who said it was our job to help another person learn to cope? That is the most fail argument I've seen so far. It is not our job to be somebody's counselor and decide for them how they should be manipulated into having thicker hides. It is our job as decent human beings to conduct ourselves with a little sensitivity, not because we're indulging the butthurt need of some "poor thing," but because it is the right thing to do.

Being a bastard to rape victims just so they can toughen up is not your job. It's just as ludicrous to approach situations with a rape victim with this sort of mindset as it would be to approach them with the mindset that they should be mollycoddled and given a false idea of reality after being raped. The latter is obviously a ridiculous and not-helpful (and highly manipulative) way of approaching these victims, so why is being a hard-ass to them 'to toughen them up' not just as fucking ridiculous?
