Re: Weird beliefs that are a deal breaker for you... (inspired by secret 7)

THIS. This right here. The fact that the leap is from "I don't know what made that sound" to "it's a ghost" with no steps in between is the problem. Not seeing the source, not knowing what animals are in the area that might make sounds, not knowing that the heating system has a loose bolt that rattles when the fan turns on...there are a million potential logical, natural reasons so I want all of them ruled out before even considering the assertation that it was a disembodied noncorporeal spirit of a Civil War soldier who may have plausibly died on this spot.

above anon is right, there are so few situations in which an experience can genuinely be so far out of our current understanding that it becomes plausible to posit that a disembodied spirit did it. I'd venture to add that we're learning so much now about how weird brains are that the number of genuine unexplained phenomena may end up at zero someday.

Exactly. Even people who consider themselves skeptics don't really explore the non-supernatural possibilities for those mystery sounds, which could be anything from a bird to an old HVAC system to a car backfiring outside.

I agree that there's a lot hard science cannot fully explain. But in the context of ghost hauntings, hard science is almost never applied and therefore lack of a scientific explanation 1) isn't that surprising and 2) is NOT sound evidence of the supernatural.
