What has caught your eye recently in the news in your area?

San Antonio has been having issues with prisons and deputies. A guy was released accidentally. The deputy who released him still has his job. The guy who was released has been charged for escaping. That's really backwards. What was he supposed to do, refuse to be released?

Someone put a full pepperoni pizza over a stop sign and nobody knows why.

Cardinal Geroge Pell, who at one time was the highest ranking Catholic in Australia, has been convicted of historical sexual offenses.
The religious right has been thrown into a tizzy, and (quelle surprise) are copping it from all corners. Particularly in the shit are two of our ex Prime Ministers, John Howard and Tony Abbot, who decided that giving *character references* to a bloke being charged with kiddy fiddling *wouldn't* come back to bite them. There's also a great deal of comment on how many of the same people who are defending Pell now argued against marriage equality not so very long ago, using that noble old argument "What about the cHiLdReN???"
So children are in more danger from gay marriage than pedo priests, hey?

There're also calls for the current PM, Scott Morrison, to publicly call for the Catholic church to condemn these criminal elements in their community, after he did the same to the Islamic community last year. But Hell has yet to freeze over, so it's not likely.

Ugh. There has been a lot in the news about sexual abuse in the Southern Baptist church as well, Which, considering I grew up around Southern Baptist people, doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Authoritarian systems are hotbeds of abuse! Let's all take a moment to look really surprised! OoO
It somehow doesn't get less depressing the more I hear about it, though.

Seriously. Terrible and not remotely surprising.

It's gross how many people have jumped on the idea that he didn't receive a fair trial or that the jury was biased. They heard evidence of his crimes and decided to convict him. I'm sure they didn't take that responsibility lightly.

The video of him answering questions with the police was disturbing. He kept saying it was rubbish but you can hear his voice change when they ask about the boys who snuck back in. He sounded so angry. That's not a normal reaction that anyone who works with children should have. Frustration, yeah. Not anger like that. The Four Corners ep last night? was it? Can't remember. Had interviews with other adults in his community who knew him to be inappropriate with boys at the swimming pool. It seems he's been pretty open in his actions in public spaces and has probably avoided charges for so long only because of who he is and who he has connections to.

I am not surprised about Tony. Bit disappointed in Howard. I don't like the man but he's shown some common sense previously. Bit suspicious that they'd jump to his defence so loudly. Wonder who's pulling the puppet strings.

After the storm, there's a serious lack of students and teachers, so some schools are closing down....and of course they're aiming for the one that's mostly minority children.

Whooo boy I hate living here. If you're going to do that, at least put me in a place with a real infrastructure and job prospects.
