City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty is really good, if you're looking for book recs as well as visual media. First in a trilogy, the second just came out in late January.

A Wind In Cairo was good? Actually, a lot by Judith Tarr involves the historical Middle East.

(Note: Fair warning, there's a brief rape scene early on in Wind. Much of the book is about the consequences.)
