I agree in general but it depends so much on the show and how it's presented and also what specific details are presented.

Throwaway jokes like a lot of the Barney stuff, that's one thing. On the other hand, with Ted, where the things that make him annoying are the things that are supposed to make him a long term romantic protagonist, it's a different kind of thing.
