While I liked Ocean's 11 enough when I first saw it, rewatching 11 after 8 made me realize how much of it is about the two men trying to control the Julia Robert's character. That's far less palatable on rewatch.
8, on the other hand, I've watched at least a dozen times since I bought it, and I love it endlessly.

I haven't come across the critique you mentioned, but... I usually like Clooney, but even he creeped me out.
(As for 12, I tried to watch it after rewatching 11, and was just so BORED. The only good part was the (post credits?) scene with the thief acro-dancing around the lasers, and half of that was the music.)
