I know he was a more minor character, but I read through this entire thread and I can’t believe nobody brought up Ritsu, the ultra-feminine crossdresser who chose to do that to deal with his anxiety and seemed fine with it, but then in the very last chapter cut his hair and started wearing male clothing and got a girlfriend! Because he isn’t “cursed” anymore (literally but also maybe not given all the context).

This author played around with gender and sexuality A LOT for a shoujo manga, but boy did she make a mess of it in every way possible.

As the anon who listed off examples of how the series has queerbaiting up thread, when I said "Rin's everything" I actually meant "Ritsu's everything" but got the names mixed up in the heat of the moment. He was definitely one of the most egregious examples of the author's bullshit.

I thought your example of Rin was accurate too, tbh. Her relationship with Tohru def leaned tsundere shoujo ai.

Oh definitely, Takaya didn't fail to bait yuri shippers as well. Even besides Rin, I distinctly remember getting major lesbian vibes from BOTH Arisa and Hana back in the day, but lo and behold, the former ends up with a dude. I can't remember if Hana does as well, but knowing this series, the answer is yes.

Fuck, I think Momiji and Kagura are literally the only characters to not be paired up at the end. Just ridiculous.
mikogalatea: Nanami from Revolutionary Girl Utena, clearing her throat in irritation. ([Utena] Nanami; annoyed)

Yeah, Hana did as well. She randomly fell in love with Kyo's mentor/adoptive father, of all people, which I thought was one of the manga's most egregious pair-the-spares cases.

??? What the hellll...

AYRT

Ritsu's case stuck out to me even though he was minor because I thought it was pretty interesting to have a character established as straight but still be living his life as a crossdresser. In real life, many drag queens and crossdressing men do date women exclusively, so exploring the challenges of those relationships could be very interesting.

Buuuuuut then we reach THAT ending, and lo, now that the curse is broken it's time to drop all that queer shit and go HARD on heteronormativity! No exception! Yeah!
