Well, realistically Ash is bisexual, not gay, he mentioned liking a girl when he was younger. And anyway, I'm wondering which interview you're thinking of. The one people usually cite is the one about how the editor wanted her to make Blanca a woman but she didn't because it would mean she "had" to pair Ash with Blanca. They discussed that such a thing would be a "Ash is actually not gay" moment, but the nuance of that interview should be more like, "For one, Ash isn't being gay (because he usually has gay relationships.)

Otherwise, she's mostly only said she doesn't consider Banana Fish a BL manga. Which is fair, in terms of genre.
