This is why stories that are actually about time travel - instead of using it as a fun device that you don't think too deeply about - are ultimately frustrating and pointless. Anyone with true time travel would be as close to omnipotent as makes no difference, and so any story about a time traveler with that kind of power ends up becoming a theodicy of some kind, and usually a pretty unsatisfying one.

So, don't worry about it so much, OP, just enjoy the fun adventure part of the fantasy.
