(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 02:27 am (UTC)(link)You should definitely be careful and skeptical about assigning yourself any mental illness without a diagnosis, especially some very specific or rare diagnosis. And having a mental illness, whether it's diagnosed or not, doesn't justify being an ass. But I really think that this kind of gatekeeping sometimes does more harm than it does good. I think it really encourages a mindset of telling yourself that you don't "really" have a mental illness, that your problems don't "count", that you're not "mentally ill enough", and I think that attitude dissuades people from getting help that they need. And I don't think that - in this specific instance, at least based on this specific post - the user in question is actually doing anything wrong.
So, IDK. I get where this impulse comes from. But I think there are times when it's not that useful.
