Well, the adaptation was by the author of the original book, William Goldman, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of the original screenplay for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the adapted screenplay for All the President's Men. I've read the book and seen the movie and read about Goldman adapting it and it's hard for me to fathom someone else doing a better job. And he can't do another adaptation, since he died in November.
