108. Eh. I think it takes no creativity to write most of what gets written, but that it takes plenty of creativity to write a sex scene that furthers plot and characterization in ways that transcend "OMG THEY HAD SEX!"

I also think "Not creative enough" is an ironic criticism to level at any fanfiction.

123. That's a pretty awesome OT3. I prefer Fuu/Mugen/Jin though.

124. Oh Christ. I would have had a field day with this guy. Well, either that or I would have directed the mormons who are always trying to recruit me when I ride the bus to him.

139. ... Let me guess: You've made an "I relate to the Joker secret" before?

153. There's nothing wrong with writing Mary Sues when you're thirteen. I would argue that it IS the cool thing you do because you get to learn how to get better and nothing you do before the age of 18 counts anyway.

This Mary Sue witch hunt is out of hand, I think. A bad character from someone who is just starting out is really nothing to freak out over, guys.

163. How come you don't think you can be beautiful? I think you're talking about more than looks here, yes?

169. People don't write OCs because of the aforementioned Mary Sue witch hunt.

I wrote some Aeris/Sephiroth, which is definitely in the same category as GaaSaku/Zutara/Dramione/SessKag and I became really incensed because one person left a review gushing over how well I wrote Sephiroth and then added at the end "I don't really care about Aeris, so I guess she's fine too."

ARGH.

171. I wouldn't call you arrogant.

173. Really? I wish I could love that game less. It's nothing but heartache, I tells ya! Plus, it makes me look like a bandwagon loser who just likes bishies with shiny hair.

TooBig#7: FUCKING SECONDED. I also hate forums dedicated to anti-pairings. Ugh. I swear to God, that's how I decide what to ship half the time: look for where I see the least vitriol. In Avatar, this has led me to Tyzula.

That's one reason I think the Mary Sue witch hunt is dumb. Mary Sues bother me less than fans who use pairings like that as a substitute for them. At least they're honest with their indulgent fantasy...and Mary Sues are likely to be funnier than your average Hot Popular Bishie Boi/Random Female Character Used As A Self-Insert fic anyway. :>

I hadn't really thought about that, but it must suck for people who ship those pairings for BOTH characters to have to deal with the above kind of fans. It's point-missing reviews like that that bug me the most, not random flames.

Mary Sues bother me WAY less than Mary Sue'd characters. Like, I'm okay with a little projection because I think that most people will project a little bit when they write, but that's no big deal. At least Mary Sues are being more honest about their intentions, I guess.

It genuinely drives me crazy and Aeris/Seph is often pretty bad for it... Christ, I just deleted almost a paragraph of rant on that, but suffice it to say that Aeris/Seph is almost entirely Sephiroth-centric and as someone who adores both of the characters it's really frustrating to read her written as a Mary Sue.

I can see the point you're making here. I think the tendency for young, just-starting-out female authors to write Sues is natural. Heck, even I wrote one or two when I was in my teens and just getting my feet wet in the fanfiction world. But I also don't think the "witch hunt," as you put it, is a bad thing. Because Sues are a crime against sanity, and someone's gotta tell those teenage authors that they're going to have to snap out of it eventually. Otherwise they might end up becoming those 30 or 40-somethings, like the one mentioned in the secret, who still see nothing wrong with writing Sues. And when it comes to those people, I'm not sure whether to pity them or laugh hysterically at them.

It's not jsut female authors, it's males too! We just don't notice it as much becuase guys don't write as much fanfiction on average, but if you look at a young teen boy's story and a young teen girl's, they're both equally Sue'd.

Sues are not a crime against sanity - as I've just said and you've just admitted, they're completely sane. And I mean, is it really so bad that wrote a story with a bad character? I'm not advocating total acceptance and normalization here, I'm saying that a witch hunt is overkill. These are, by and large, young and inexperienced authors who are just trying to have a little fun. I don't think there's any harm in having a quiet and good-natured giggle at their expense, but I've seen 12 year olds just hunted down on snarking comms and ffrants and it's just completely ridiculous. Yes, someone should tell them how to develop a character at some point, but in all likelihood they'll figure out how to develop a character on their own, as was the case with the OP of this secret and if I'm reading correctly yourself.

The 30-40 somethings who end up as Suethors are NOT going to be reformed by you or anyone else screaming at them, and that might only be pushing them further down the path.

THANK YOU ♥

I find the Mary Sue communities and their mob mentality far scarier than any fic I've read, anyway.

Oh hell no. Not even a "I'm sick of Joker Secrets" secret. I just ignore them all.

If my declaration of my choice to not cast a vote this General Election angers you. . .find comfort in knowing that I am a firm believer that if you don't vote. . .you have no right to bitch or complain about how people are running the governments. The next four years, I will be silent with my opinion of whoever is sitting in the White House.

I feel I will get better use with my ballot in "having a voice" by incorporating it into a painting I plan on doing to show some of the disgusting things I have seen go on between parties and fanatics.

Also, no. I wasn't a Hillary supporter either. . .
