Iirc, she was just kind of generally annoying? Like she wouldn't brag about herself, but was constantly stepping aside to say, "Here's what so-and-so thought of me..." followed by some ridiculously OTT praise. Every performance she ever gave was beyond amazing etc. I just remember sort of laughing at it by the time I was a quarter of the way through the book.

I think at the time I was reading it she was doing that movie with Bette Davis? And it's just so night and day--Bette Davis was always criticizing herself. I remember reading an article about that movie at the time and I think there was a general sense of LG being this wonderfully gracious, sweet old lady while Bette Davis more intimidating and difficult and it reminded me of how much respect I had for Bette Davis' badass self.:-)

Yeah, she was sort of this paragon of virtue - annoying after awhile. That's why her sister Dorothy was always more interesting. She'd run around with boys and smoke and probably figured there was NO WAY of living up to her sister, so why bother? And of course, it's Dorothy's performance in Hearts of the World that makes the movie bearable.

As for Lillian, there was some repressed Victorian nastiness going on between her and DW Griffith. I'm so convinced of it.
