i kind of don't like that whole "wow once she stopped taking her medications she felt so much better and her creative endeavors were so much better!" thing though just from that shitty "being sad makes you more creative/make better art!" narrative especially regarding medication, like i don't think that's what they were trying to say, but that's what i was getting from it, lol /tangent

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 08:10 am (UTC)(link)This is true, but I found it hard to tell whether it was supposed to be a "Vanya's always showing up harried and late" thing or a "Everybody looks down on Vanya--when they notice her at all" thing. But because Violin seems to be the one thing Vanya really cares about in her life, and because the narrative goes out of its way to show her practicing all the time, and because of the things she says to the first chair, I choose to go with the latter explanation of that scene.

If I thought her meds were anti-depressants I might agree with you. But I presume her meds are...some weird, special drug that's supposed to keep her dulled and suppressed in some way, to minimize the risk of her accidentally discovering her powers.
