I guess for me, it was like the difference between a white westerner using, say, a Japanese username/handle on a blog or something because they admired Japanese culture or liked the sound or meaning of the name, but being open about their cultural background or at least not actively duplicitous, and doing the same thing but claiming to be Japanese. And then this guy went a step further and got a job that he wouldn’t have landed otherwise off his lie.

There was that white woman, Rachel something, who claimed she was black and headed up a local chapter of a civil rights group, and it reminds me of that. As a white woman myself I feel like I have enough advantages; it’d be selfish and stupid to poach ones that don’t apply to me.

AYRT—I thought she claimed she did when she was caught but her parents said something about how she just wanted attention/to be special, which maybe could be a symptom of something but idk.
